The City Council recently met to adopt the 2012-2013 Fiscal Year Budget for the City of Maryville. Adoption of the annual budget is the single most important process of a City’s Governing Body and Administration. The budget is the principal policy management tool of the Governing Body and an operations plan for administration. It represents the culmination of projecting available resources for the upcoming year to create the financial plan for spending those resources. The City of Maryville typically budgets from a historical perspective looking at current programs, annual trends, and making minimal adjustments to maintain current service levels. Over this past year, the City Council has met to determine key performance areas and goals that were used to make decisions during budget preparation. The 2012-2013 Fiscal Year Budget represents a trend toward priority-based budgeting and establishing performance measurements in the future. The document entitled “2012-2013 Budget Toward Performance” outlines several key expenditures in the adopted budget and how they relate to the adopted key performance areas.

Staff is currently working on the 2012-2013 City of Maryville Budget Document, which will explain the adopted budget in greater detail. The document will be prepared in a format to increase transparency and reduce the level of difficulty for readers who may not be familiar with municipal budgeting systems. The document will provide comprehensive fiscal information and communicate the direction and policies of the City of Maryville.
