Car Seat Safety and Inspection

 Car Seat Banner

The Maryville Public Safety Department is committed to preventing child injuries and deaths in vehicle crashes by educating citizens on how to safely transport kids.  Our department currently has one Sergeant and three officers that are certified as car seat technicians.  Parents and caregivers are encouraged to learn how to properly install a car seat or booster seat in their vehicle with the assistance of our car seat technicians.  To schedule a car seat inspection contact our department at 660-562-3209.

Child Safety Information:

  • Children under 4 years old or under 40 lbs need to be in a child safety seat.  (It is recommended to have the child rear-facing until 2 years of age or until the child reaches the maximum height and weight of the seat.  There are now seats that go up to 40 and 45 lbs rear facing!).

  • Children ages 4-7 and 40-80 lbs and under 4'9" in child safety seat or booster seat. (it is recommended to have the child in a five-point harness until the maximum weight of the harness is reached...then move to belt positioning booster [booster with seat belt]).

Booster Seat

  • Children at/or above 4 years and at/or above 80 lbs or at/or above 4'9" in a booster seat using seat belt (belt positioning booster) or seat belt alone. (It is recommended that a belt positioning booster be used as long as possible.  The child is more likely to use the seat belt properly if it is correctly positioned across the body, instead of across the neck area).
